Switchboard Upgrades: When Do You Need One?

24 Jun 2026

Last updated June 2026. The signs a switchboard needs upgrading, what's involved and how it's sized. A switchboard upgrade must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Quick answer: You likely need a switchboard upgrade if you still have ceramic rewireable fuses, no RCD safety switches, a full board with no spare ways, or you're adding a big load like an EV charger, ducted air-conditioner or solar. A licensed electrician fits a new board with RCBOs/RCDs to AS/NZS 3000.

Signs you need a switchboard upgrade

  • Ceramic rewireable fuses — the old porcelain fuse holders with fuse wire. Outdated and no match for modern loads.
  • No RCDs (safety switches) — if there are no test buttons, the board has no residual-current protection.
  • The board is full — no spare ways to add a circuit for an EV charger, air-con or a renovation.
  • Nuisance tripping or flickering — a board working beyond its capacity.
  • You're adding major load — EV charging, ducted AC, induction cooktop, solar or a battery often forces an upgrade.
  • Asbestos backing panel — common on older boards and a reason to replace properly.
  • A rewire or major reno — the natural time to bring the board up to current standards.

What's involved in a switchboard upgrade?

A licensed electrician arranges supply isolation (often with the network), removes the old board and fits a new distribution board / enclosure with:

  • A main switch (and surge protection if specified)
  • RCBOs — combined RCD + circuit breaker — on the circuits, the modern approach to meeting RCD rules
  • Properly rated busbars, neutral and earth links
  • Clear circuit labelling and testing/certification

New circuits added during a renovation generally trigger RCD protection requirements under AS/NZS 3000 — see our explainer on RCD vs RCBO vs MCB.

How is a switchboard sized?

The board is sized by the number of circuits ("ways" or "poles") plus headroom for the future. A good rule is to leave 20–30% spare ways so the next circuit — an EV charger, a studio, a pool — doesn't mean another upgrade.

Board size Roughly suits
4–6 pole Small unit, granny flat, sub-board
12 pole Smaller home
24 pole Typical modern family home
36 pole Large home, lots of circuits / future loads

Outdoor or exposed boards should be an IP-rated enclosure (e.g. IP66). Your electrician confirms the right size and rating for the installation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Tell-tale signs are ceramic rewireable fuses, no RCD safety switches (no test buttons), a board with no spare ways, frequent tripping, or plans to add a big load like an EV charger or ducted air-conditioning.

Is a switchboard upgrade a legal requirement?

There's no blanket rule to upgrade an existing compliant board, but once you add or alter circuits, the new work must meet AS/NZS 3000 — which usually means RCD protection and often a board upgrade. A licensed electrician will advise.

Do I need RCDs on every circuit?

Modern installs use an RCBO (combined RCD + breaker) per circuit so every final sub-circuit is protected. The exact requirement depends on the circuits being added or altered under AS/NZS 3000.

How many spare ways should a new board have?

Leave around 20–30% spare ways. It costs little upfront and saves a second upgrade when you next add a circuit such as an EV charger or air-conditioner.
