What's the difference between Iconic and Iconic Slimline? +

Iconic Slimline is a flatter cover-plate variant of the same Iconic mechanism range — designed for modern interiors where customers want a less protruding profile against the wall. Same mechanisms; thinner plate. Limited finish range vs the standard Iconic profile.

Can I mix Iconic with older Clipsal switch ranges? +

Functionally yes — Iconic GPOs, switches and dimmers are all 230/240V Australian-spec and meet the same standards as older Clipsal ranges (Classic, Saturn, etc.). Visually mixing creates a non-uniform finish across a fit-out — most customers don't like it. The fix is replacing a whole wall or room with matching Iconic to keep finish consistent.

Are Iconic plates interchangeable across mechanism generations? +

Yes within the Iconic range. The cover plate clips off without disturbing the mechanism, so a customer wanting to change from Vivid White to Anthracite can swap plates without re-wiring or replacing GPOs. The cover plates are sold separately for this reason.

What's the lead time on bulk orders? +

Stock items: same-day pick-up from North Parramatta. Specific finishes or unusual configurations (key card switches, specialty cover plates, larger gang counts): typically 2–5 business days from Schneider's Sydney distribution warehouse. Call the counter for a quote on bulk fit-out projects.

Clipsal Iconic is Clipsal's modular switch and GPO range — designed around a single internal mechanism that mounts into a separate cover plate. It's the default specification for most modern Australian residential and light commercial fit-outs and the range Sydney sparkies install more than any other.

ARCK Electrical stocks Iconic SKUs at our North Parramatta trade counter — from single switches to 6-gang plates, GPOs with USB-A and USB-C, dimmers, light intensity controllers and motion sensors.

Why Iconic is the default specification

A few things keep Iconic in the spec on most Sydney new builds and renovations:

  • Single mechanism architecture — the same internal switch / GPO mechanism fits every cover plate option. You stock one set of mechanisms, swap cover plates for finish changes.
  • Wide finish range — Vivid White (the white standard), Anthracite (modern dark), Silver Shadow, Pearl White, plus designer ranges. Customers get the finish without re-running back to source matched plates.
  • Backward and forward compatibility — mechanisms from Iconic generations talk to each other so retrofits don't force a complete plate replacement.
  • Australian-warrantied — Clipsal is Australian-distributed by Schneider Electric Australia; warranty claims handled locally.

Common combinations on a domestic fit-out

A typical Sydney new build will run through these GPO and switch counts:

  • Single GPO at every bedroom bedside, study desk, lounge wall
  • Double GPO at every kitchen bench (typically 6+ doubles in a modern kitchen)
  • Quad GPO behind TV / AV equipment
  • USB GPO in master bedroom + study + kitchen
  • 3-gang switch at every room entry where lighting, fan and lounge feed are switched together
  • Dimmer on every living-area lighting circuit
  • Motion sensor switch in walk-in robe, pantry, laundry — auto-on lighting where the customer needs it

For high-end fit-outs, designer finishes (Anthracite, brushed metal) replace Vivid White through the public-facing rooms.

Specifying the right Iconic for the job

A few practical things to check when picking the right SKU:

  • GPO amp rating: 10A is the standard domestic. 15A and 20A variants exist for higher-load points.
  • Switch pole count: 1-way (default), 2-way (stair-light + hallway-light combinations), intermediate (rare — three or more switching points).
  • Dimmer compatibility: check the dimmer specification against the LED driver type on the lighting circuit. Trailing edge for most modern LED drivers, leading edge for older incandescent / halogen.
  • Weather-rated: external GPOs and switches in damp areas need IP-rated enclosures — Iconic has matching IP-rated variants and bezels.

Compliance note

Electrical work in Australia must be carried out by a licensed electrician under AS/NZS 3000. Iconic devices are AS/NZS-certified and rated for the standard Australian 230/240V supply. Installation, circuit protection (RCBO/RCD coverage per the 2018 amendments), and final test sit with the licensed installer.
